Waste Handling Systems
TYPICAL SOLID WASTE MATERIALS ARE RARELY A SOURCE OF IGNITION, THEY ARE A POTENTIAL SOURCE OF FUEL FOR FIRES. THEREFORE, A PROMPT EFFICIENT MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IS ESSENTIAL FOR FIRESAFETY.
WASTE CHUTES
USUALLY FIXED SYSTEM FOR TRANSPORTING WASTE MATERIALS FROM POINTS OF GENERATION TO CENTRALIZED DISPOSAL AREAS.
THERE ARE 4 BASIC TYPES:
- GENERAL ACCESS GRAVITY CHUTE - ENCLOSED VERTICAL PASSAGEWAY. TRANSPORT BY GRAVITY ALONE. ALL OCCUPANTS HAVE UNLIMITED ACCESS. (UNLINED STEEL OR MASONRY)
- LIMITED ACCESS GRAVITY CHUTE - SIMILAR, HOWEVER ACCESS IS RESTRICTED (i.e. HEALTH CARE FACILITIES)
- PNEUMATIC CHUTE - USES AIR FLOW TO TRANSPORT WASTE MATERIALS TO CENTRAL COLLECTION AREA. 60 MPH WINDS BLOW FROM GENERATOR TO TERMINATION AND EXHAUST POINT. (UNLINED STEEL, STAINLESS, GALVANIZED, ALUMINUM).
- GRAVITY-PNEUMATIC CHUTE - CONVENTIONAL GRAVITY CHUTE FEEDS PNEUMATIC CHUTE.
CHUTE PENETRATION.
- METAL CHUTES WITHOUT FIRE RESISTANCE MUST BE ENCLOSED IN MASONRY OR OTHER FIRE RATED MATERIAL. MASONRY CHUTES ARE NOT REQUIRED TO BE ENCLOSED. WHEN CHUTES PENETRATE FIRE RATED WALLS/ CEILINGS/FLOORS, A FIRE DAMPER IS REQUIRED.
