BUILDINGS UTILIZED FOR STORAGE OF GOODS, MERCHANDISE, PRODUCTS, VEHICLES, OR ANIMALS. THEY MAY BE SEPARATE OR PART OF AN ADJOINING BUILDING/OCCUPANCY. EXAMPLES INCLUDE WAREHOUSES, PARKING GARAGES, BARNS, AIRCRAFT HANGARS, ETC.
MODERN TECHNOLOGY HAS ALLOWED HIGH RACK STORAGE. HIGH RACK STORAGE ALLOWS ITEMS TO BE STORED 50 -100 FT ABOVE GROUND WITH COMPUTER OPERATED CRANES.
MINI-STORAGE FACILITIES ARE AVAILABLE RANGING IN SIZE FROM 40 - 400 SQUARE FEET. THERE IS VERY LITTLE CONTROL OVER THE TYPE AND AMOUNT OF STORAGE.
STORAGE OCCUPANCIES CONSIST OF RAW MATERIALS, FINISHED PRODUCT, OR GOODS ON INTERMEDIATE STAGE. THEY CAN BE FOUND IN BULK STORAGE, SOLID PILES, PALLETS, OR IN RACKS.
STORAGE CAN GREATLY AFFECT FIRE BEHAVIOR. NOTE ALSO THAT A PACKAGED COMMODITY MUST BE CONSIDERED AS A WHOLE, BECAUSE THAT IS HOW IS BURNS.
OCCUPANT LOAD
USUALLY ONLY FEW PEOPLE EMPLOYED IN THESE FACILITIES. EVEN LESS IN HIGH RACK STORAGE BUILDINGS.
THE LIFE SAFETY CODE DOES NOT REQUIRE AN OCCUPANT LOAD.
101 DOES HOWEVER, SPECIFY THAT THERE MUST BE AT LEAST 2 METHODS OF EGRESS.
