Code

Code - a law which sets forth minimum requirements for design and construction.

Codes can be written for any number of specific areas of concern
(i.e. building, electrical, plumbing, as well as fire).

Codes, typically fall into two categories:

  1. Those that govern the construction and occupancy of a building when it is being planned and constructed.  (Building code regulations)
  2. Those that regulate the activities within the building, once it has been constructed.  (Fire code regulations)

Codes are generally written as standards by some jurisdictions or organizations and then they are adopted as law. These are known as model codes.
