IN BUILDING CONSTRUCTION

The Buckingham Apartment complex in Chesterfield County, Virginia provides a prime example of how major, approved construction tradeoffs are offered to promote installation of residential sprinklers and make them economically feasible. Some examples follow:

• Tenant separations reduced from 3/8 inch Type X fire-rated gypsum wallboard to 1/2-inch standard wallboard
• Party walls between townhouses reduced from 2-hour rating to 1-hour rating
• Draft stops in attics required every 3000 square feet instead of between each unit
• No requirement for 1-hour rating of walls and doors to hazardous areas
• 1-hour rated walls instead of 2-hour rated walls between townhouse units

Extension of exit travel distance from 20 to 35 feet
