Theres a new hero coming to town a remote-controlled device that lets firefighters in high-rise blazes pour water on flames from the safety of another floor. The FDNY will run pilot tests with the new technology known as the Hero Pipe when four of the devices arrive next month, The Post has learned.
The lightweight pipe system can be attached to a windowsill on the floor beneath the source of the fire, and then telescope upward so large amounts of water can be dumped directly onto the flames. Firefighters stay out of harms way by directing the nozzle with a remote control from the floor below.
The Hero Pipe can pull water from a buildings interior standpipe system or be hooked up to a fire truck. Each device costs $62,000, the manufacturer said.
