Purpose:
To enable persons with minimum training to extinguish an incipient fire.
DOL, OSHA, NAFED conducted a study of effectiveness. Of the 5400 fire reported during the study, 5073 (93.9 %) fires were controlled by fire extinguishers.
Although the fire may be controlled by extinguishers, never delay notifying the fire department.
Extinguishers are classified according to the type of fire they may be applied to (Class A, B, C, D). It is possible for the extinguisher to be applied to multiple classes of fires (e.g. ABC, BC).
Extinguishers are rated based on tests conducted by Underwriter's Laboratories. These tests are designed to determine the extinguishing potential for each size and type of extinguisher.
