Occupancies

Hotels

BUILDINGS which PROVIDE SLEEPING ACCOMMODATIONS FOR MORE THAN 16 PERSONS. INCLUDES MOTELS, INNS. GUEST QUARTERS, ETC.

PRESENT SPECIAL CHALLENGES BECAUSE OF COMBINATION OF SEVERAL OCCUPANCIES UNDER ONE ROOF. HOTELS INCLUDE SLEEPING QUARTERS AND USUALLY MEETING ROOMS, EXHIBITION HALLS, RESTAURANTS (ASSEMBLY), SHOPPING AREAS (MERCANTILE), AND OFFICES (BUSINESS).

IF THESE OCCUPANCIES ARE SEPARATED BY A 2-HOUR FIRE BARRIER THEY CAN BE CONSIDERED SEPARATE OCCUPANCIES.

WITHOUT BARRIER, EGRESS REQUIRE REQUIRMENTS MUST COMPLY WITH THE MOST RESTRICT REQUIREMENTS.

SINCE HOTEL GUESTS ARE TRANSIENTS, SPECIAL CONSIDERATION MUST BE GIVEN TO LIFE SAFETY BECAUSE OCCUPANTS ARE SLEEPING IN UNFAMILIAR SURROUNDINGS AND COULD BECOME DISORIENTED UNDER SMOKE CONDITIONS.

NFPA 101 REQUIRES EMERGENCY EXIT LIGHTING IF MORE THAN 25 ROOMS.

EACH FLOOR SHOULD HAVE TWO SEPARATE AND REMOTE EXITS.

CORRIDOR WALLS SHOULD HAVE A HALF-HOUR FIRE RESISTANCE RATING WITH A 20-MINUTE FIRE RATED, SELF CLOSING ROOM DOORS. (SPRINKLERS = SMOKE RESISTANT)

STAIRWELL DOORS MAY LOCK WHEN CLOSED. DOORS MUST UNLOCK AUTOMATICALLY WHEN FIRE ALARM SYSTEM ACTIVATES OR WHEN FIRE ALARM SYSTEM ACTIVATES OR WHEN POWER GOES OUT.

FIRE DOORS AND SELF CLOSING AND LATCHING DOORS ARE REQUIRED TO CONTAIN SMOKE, HEAT, AND FIRE IN ROOM OF ORIGIN (KEEPING CORRIDORS TENABLE).

INTERIOR FINISH

HOTELS CONTAIN HEAVY AMOUNTS OF TEXTILES, BEDDING, CARPETING. WALL COVERINGS, AND LACQUERED FURNITURE. EVEN THOUGH THESE ITEMS ARE TREATED FOR FLAMMABILITY, THEY STILL PRESENT A PROBLEM DUE TO THEIR LARGE VOLUME.
